How Water Quality Affects Your Skin and Hair Health

Actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn once said, “Water is life, and clean water means health.” She hit the nail on the head, and especially considering that researchers once surveyed over 75,000 bodies of water in 89 countries, finding that more than 40% were significantly polluted, Hepburn’s wise words are still as important as ever.

You don’t need us to tell you that dirty water is bad for you — but in what ways is it, exactly? In this blog, we’re exploring how water quality can negatively affect the health of your hair and skin specifically.

You Are Water, Literally

Maybe you’ve heard this before, but it’s worth reiterating.

Up to 60% of your body is water. Your skin contains about 64% water, your muscles and kidneys about 79%, and your bones (yes, bones!) are about 31% water. Every living cell in your body needs water to function properly.

Now, imagine that you do drink water, but it’s teeming with chemicals, bacteria, and other contaminants. How do you think your cells will respond? How do you think your skin will look and feel?

If you’re experiencing pesky breakouts or rashes, it could be due to the pollutants in your tap water. Dirty water can leave your skin feeling dry and looking dull. No amount of moisturizer will address the root issue: Consuming contaminated water is bad for you, period, even if you’re drinking enough to technically stay hydrated.

What Does Your Hair Have to Do With It?

By the time it’s growing out of your head, your hair doesn’t contain that much water. However, just like water is vital to your survival, it’s also crucial to the health of your tresses. Think of your hair like a plant. What’s one thing a plant needs to grow strong? Water.

Like every other part of your body, your hair starts in your cells. Before those cells begin to keratinize, they contain about 70% water. This stage plays a huge role in your hair’s overall growth.

Once again, this comes down to “fueling” your cells with contaminated water. If you don’t feed your cells properly, then they can’t perform optimally. This is why very often, if you’re having problems with your hair health, you should first look at your scalp and follicles, not the hair itself.

Strong, thick, silky locks demand plenty of clean, purified water, and it all starts before your hair even begins to grow out of your head.

Remember One of Water’s Main Jobs

There’s one more thing to consider: Water helps to eliminate waste and toxins from your body. This is also critical for the health of your skin, hair, and everything else happening in your body. But this is impossible if water is the source of toxins in the first place.

Furthermore, you need clean water to deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout your body — including to your skin and hair. Water isn’t just fuel; it’s a vehicle.

The Contaminants in Your Water

There are countless pollutants that could be contaminating your drinking water, like hormones, pesticides, lead, fertilizers, fluoridemicroplastics, and chlorine. If you live near livestock, your water supply might be contaminated with animal waste. Conditions near construction sites could also introduce additional pollutants into your tap water.

We should also keep in mind that it’s not only our skin and hair at risk. Besides drinking water, we wash and cook our food in it, water our gardens with it, and run through the sprinklers with our children.

We’re exposed to water in many ways, every single day. We need it to survive, and yet, just because it comes from nature doesn’t automatically mean that it’s safe.

How to Address Water Pollution at Home

What we put on and in our bodies has a profound impact on our wellness. If you’re drinking tap water at home, even if you’re using a run-of-the-mill filter that’s built into your refrigerator or latches onto the faucet, there’s a good chance that there are still contaminants floating around in your H2O.

So, what can you do about it?

The Power of Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration

There’s a reason why your Brita water filter can’t get the job done. The filters it utilizes are simply too weak. The latest in water filtration technology is reverse osmosis (RO), which is so effective that the only thing that can pass through it is water molecules.

The Sans water purifier combines reverse osmosis with UV-C water purification, removing impurities down to 0.0001 microns in size, in addition to pathogens like viruses and bacteria, which can make you sick. Whether you have city or well water, you can never be too careful when it comes to filtration. Sans does what competing brands can’t, giving you peace of mind that what you’re putting into your body is clean and pure.

Plus, it auto-refills, so you’ve always got a full pitcher of fresh H2O, and instantly dispenses hot water for your tea or coffee. Our SmartPure technology uses an incredibly precise TDS sensor, plus a digital display, so you can monitor the quality of your water in real time.

Our countertop design is modern and inconspicuous, there’s no setup or installation required, and you can take the removable glass pitcher with you around your home.
